Concept Map: The Secret Garden
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.7 Analyze how visual and
multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g.,
graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem).
I. read the book
By reading the book, students will automically
picture in their heads what they think is happening. They will be illustrating
in their own head. The students will take turns reading aloud in class . This
way students will be able to create their own view of the book while someone
else is reading.

I will pass out paper to the students for them to
answer on. I am having students write a page on what they thought the garden
would look like. By writing it down, it is getting students to have to recall
what they were illustrating in their own minds. I am using the garden because
it is the easiest thing to specifically picture besides just saying the entire
book.

III. watch the movie
Students will watch the movie in class. I will just
have the students stay in their normal seats during the movie. If a child has a
circumstance where he/she cannot see the screen, then I will allow that student
to move seats. The students will watch the movie to be able to see what other
people imagined the garden to look like. I am thinking their perception of the
garden will change due to actually seeing the garden compared to them imagining
it themselves.

IV. ask
students to recall differences of the garden from the book to the movie
I will pass out paper for students to answer on. I
will then instruct students to recall what they thought the garden would look
like after reading the book. Then I will ask the same question but what they
thought after seeing the movie. I will then have them examine how their
perception changed after reading and viewing the movie, or if it did not
change.

view the garden after watching the movie. I am thinking their perception will
have changed and I want them to be able to note that. Also, if their perception
has not changed, I want them to be able to note that as well.

I feel that this book is very appropriate for the 5th grade level. I love the idea or writing down what they thought the garden would look like. They could even illustrate this as well.
ReplyDeleteI like the activities you used in your lesson. I think having them write what they thought the garden would look like before watching the movie and then again after is a good compare and contrast activity. I think this is a good lesson for fifth graders!

ReplyDeleteGreat incorporation of different learning strategies. The compare and contrast really requires students to use their critical thinking skills. Love the lesson.
ReplyDeleteYour concept map is SO cute!! Children will love the way that it looks! The Secret Garden is a great book for 5th grade students to read. Great way to incorporate a child's imagination in to your lesson by having them picture the garden for themselves. I love that you chose one aspect of the story (the garden) to elaborate on.

ReplyDeleteI like how you ask them to picture what they think the garden looks like. And it's a very appropriate lesson I feel like for 5th grade. I like the idea of starting your own garden for a science aspect on it.

ReplyDeleteI like this book, many boys do not though. It is a sad story but good. This book has been off the shelf for a while though. Make it more of a garden.
ReplyDeleteIt is a good theme and book for this age group! Great ideas! If you wanted to extend it to a full week you could incorporate other subjects too.

ReplyDeleteYou chose a great book to teach with this common core standard. I know fifth graders may not think it's as a cool, but I think it would be cool to integrate science in this lesson as well and have them start their own garden. Very nice lesson!!
ReplyDeleteI think that your activities went well with your story! The compare contrast from the book and the movie was a really good idea. It will give students an idea that movies and books are different from each other sometimes, it will also help them learn that they cant always cheat and watch the movie instead of reading!

I liked how your map was done very creatively. I think you could incorporate science into your lesson.
ReplyDeleteThis would be a great lesson to go outside and observe the different types of plants. Your class can even plant their own plant. This is a great lesson and very appropriate for fifth grade. Great job!
